BINTAN, July 21–22, 2025 – As part of the Road to the International Battery Summit (IBS) 2025, a delegation comprising Mr. Denny Abdi, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Vietnam, and representatives from the National Battery Research Institute (NBRI) conducted a strategic site visit to the Galang Bintan Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Pulau Bintan, Riau Islands. The visit aimed to gain firsthand insights into Indonesia’s industrial downstreaming initiatives and explore opportunities for advancing sustainable industrial ecosystems.
The delegation visited PT Bintan Alumina Indonesia (BAI), one of Indonesia’s key downstream processing facilities, where bauxite is refined into alumina for export to international markets, including Singapore, Russia, and China. The visit highlighted the strategic importance of value-added mineral processing in enhancing Indonesia’s industrial competitiveness and supporting the country’s ambition to become a major player in global supply chains.
The delegation also toured PT Bintan Cell Indonesia, a modern and highly automated solar panel manufacturing facility operated with advanced robotic technologies. With products serving export markets abroad, the facility demonstrates Indonesia’s growing capabilities in renewable energy manufacturing and its commitment to developing clean technology industries that contribute to the global energy transition.
The Bintan KEK further showcased a successful model of integrated industrial development, supported by comprehensive infrastructure, including power generation facilities, artificial water reservoirs, and solar energy systems. Discussions also highlighted future plans to establish a recycling center within the industrial area, subject to regulatory approval, reflecting a strong commitment to circular economy principles and sustainable industrial practices.
The visit concluded with an audience with Mr. Ahmad Hasan, Governor of the Riau Islands, where discussions focused on regional development opportunities, industrial investment, and the strategic role of the Riau Islands in supporting Indonesia’s downstreaming agenda and green industrial transformation. The delegation then continued to Batam, where cultural exchanges and informal interactions further strengthened relationships among participants and reinforced a shared commitment to advancing sustainable development.
As part of the Road to IBS 2025, this site visit underscores Indonesia’s significant potential in industrial downstreaming, renewable energy development, and integrated manufacturing ecosystems. It also highlights the country’s determination to leverage its natural resources responsibly, foster innovation, and build sustainable industries that support long-term economic growth and the global transition toward clean energy.
